Pruning Guide

Pruning is important to keep your plants healthy and productive. Use this guide to find our top tips and recommended pruning tools to ensure your garden flourishes.
WHY PRUNE?
Pruning impacts how plants grow every year. It keeps plants healthy and maintains their size and shape.
Helps remove any damaged branches, which may grow inwards or diseased before it spreads.
Allows more light and air circulation into the garden benefiting other plants’ growth.
Protects your property from potential damage of falling branches.
Gives trees a tidy and polished appearance.
Sets the tree up with a good foundation for long term growth.
HOW TO PRUNE?
Firstly check the area you are pruning to ensure there are no bird nests or other animal inhabitants.
Cut branches one at a time. Avoid cutting multiple branches with a single cut.
Make sure you are using a tool with a sharp blade and use disinfectant to prevent disease transmission.
Cut the correct distance – prune just above (1.5cm) the branch collar to avoid damaging the trunk.
Always start by removing damaged, dead, diseased shoots followed by branches that are weak, rubbing, growing inwards or crossing over each other.
Get the right angle – cut at 45 degree angle to stop moisture collecting at the wound.
WHEN TO PRUNE?

Pruning at the correct time is very important to ensure your garden flourishes. Different shrubs, plants and trees require maintenance at different times of the year. Find out when to prune below.

FLOWERING TREES, SHRUBS AND VINES
LATE WINTER & EARLY SPRING

When the leaves have fallen it’s easier to see a plants framework and carry out renovation pruning to encourage growth and prevent the spread of disease.

Fruit trees and berry plants
EARLY SPRING ONCE DORMANT

Prune dormant trees encourages growth in the spring. However, pruning in early spring makes it easier to identify (and remove) the branches that did not survive the winter. This is a good time to prune a large fruit tree if you want to make it more compact.

Evergreens
EARLY SPRING OR NOT AT ALL

In spring lightly prune the whole shrub to encourage buds to break further down the stems. Remove old flowers (deadhead) and take out stems and branches to improve congestion and balance the plant.

PERENNIALS
AUTUMN OR LATE WINTER

Trimming Perennials after flowering finishes in autumn helps improve their appearance and flowering. If you want to reduce the height of the plant you should prune in spring.

TOP TIPS
A common error is to give an all over trim. If too much material is removed at once, vigorous growth can occur.
Cut in stages to evaluate the appearance of the tree.
Make sure you use a sharp pruning tool to ensure you get a clean cut.
PRUNING SAFETY
Assess the area in which branches may fall and place warning signs or barricades if necessary before beginning. If in any doubt engage a qualified tree surgeon or aboriculturist.
Always wear protective glasses and if necessary gloves and head protection.
Ensure pets and children are at a distance from the pruning area in case of falling branches.
